Inside the Circle of Fire: Sheffield Sound Exhibition

Chris Watson, one of the UK's prominent sound recordists, captured the 'Steel City's Song'. A collection of Sheffield's ambience was juxtaposed with a beautiful reel of images from around Sheffield.

Purpose
To take visitors on an aural journey through Sheffield.

Content
The Hall was encompassed by a 20-speaker ambisonic system delivering to the audience the work of Chris Watson along with an ambient visual reel portrayed on 3 surrounding projections.

Target Audience
Residents, young and old, of Sheffield. Artists, sound engineers and creative individuals.

Design/Style
The exhibition encompasses a largely empty space, occupied by only four mauve sofas in the center of the room with three projection screens dwelling on its walls representing the city of Sheffield and it's valley dwelling. Yet the exhibition hardly feels vacant. Chris has used a minimalist approach to draw focus to the audio as well as it's partnering with the image reel.

Location
Millennium Galleries Exhibition Hall

Suitability

Legal and Ethical Considerations
All content shown at the exhibition was captured by Chris Watson and so there was no breach of copyrighted material. Content in the production was respectful of all people and was appropriate for it's purpose minimizing its potential to cause any offense to the audience.

Health and Safety
The volume emanating from the sound system was set at a safe level. The visuals lacked flashing images so there was no danger of seizures.

Personal Response
I really admired how the exhibition was laid out, focusing the audiences attention to the center of the room with the dim lighting. The surrounding of screens displaying the images was fantastic as it created a dense sense of atmosphere combined with the soundtrack played overhead. The minimalist approach to seating along with all the other features employs an relaxing aura for it's listeners.
